दिल तो पागल है
I can sum up the reason I wanted to see this film in two words: Madhuri Dixit. And, apart from her shining smile, Dil to pagal hai ("The heart is mad indeed") has little to recommend it. It’s a fairly standard romance tale – tomboyish Nisha (Karishma Kapoor) loves arrogant Rahul (larger-than-life superstar Shah Rukh Khan, in as strutting and preening a performance as ever), who doesn’t believe that love exists. Enter the romantic Pooja (Madhuri), who challenges Rahul’s resolve but is engaged to Ajay (Akshaye Kumar).
Yawn.
The writers and the actors alike seem to have phoned this one in. Madhuri looks gorgeous, but ultimately that’s not enough to sustain the weak script. The best thing about this film is that it has a couple of decent songs (though a couple of awful ones too), notably “Koi ladki hai,” a smartly-choreographed romp in the rain with a bunch of adorable street urchins. It's a reasonable timepass if you are an eager fan of any of its principals - worth watching if you are desperate for a Madhuri fix, for example - but hardly memorable.
