What a brilliant idea! Much as I disliked the new Umrao (couldnt bear seeing it- promos turned me off), a bio of Khanaum w/ Shabana would b magic! Now only if one of those director-types would read your blog....

Shweta, in my dreams all kinds of interesting people read my blog - writers, directors, Javed sahib, Shabana ji ... (-:

It might be said that the 2006 Umrao Jaan is the 1981 Umrao Jaan with all traces of feminism excised.

    so very true

I saw the original Umrao jaan - Shabana's mom Shaukat Azmi was simply brillliant

Shabana is an excellent actress and she is one of my favourite actresses in Bollywood. However in this instance, I don't think she could have surpassed her mom!

It's such a tough call - for a while I resisted making a direct comparison between the two Khanums because my loyalties just shredded any hope of objectivity. In the end, though, while I won't use your word "surpassed," I did find Shabana's Khanum more enjoyable to watch. I found that the Khanum in the new film was a little more vulnerable, which I enjoyed. I also enjoyed watching Shabana, who is normally so understated in her performance, chewing up the scenery right and left. But everything else about the 1981 film was so much better - and just the pleasure of seeing Shaukat in action (she was primarily a stage actress) was worth quite a lot as well.

    Hi Carla

If you really want to watch Shabana in action, pls see Shyam Benegal's film "Mandi". Smita Patil also had an imp role in that film. Shyam is the one who made Ankur too.

She plays the head of a brothel - the film is set in Hyd. The locales and local lingo were very good. Shabana was simply superb. She had to put on a lot of weight to suit the role! Her role in this movie is quite unlike anything else she has done

    cheers

Thanks so much for the recommendation, Meera. *Mandi* is in my collection waiting to be watched, and will probably be the next of Shabana ji's films I watch. They tell me there are other actors in Hindi films though - who knew? ;-)

    Carla

Have you seen any of Smita Patil's other movies like Aakrosh, Ardh Satya? Om Puri and Smita Patil have done a fab job in these movies. These are serious movies ie so called art movies unlike the main stream song and dance bollywood movies.

I am forgetting the name of the movie where Smita plays a lame girl which also had Om Puri and others in it.

Smita was a very talented and beautiful actress. I guess you have seen Bhumika for which she won the National Award for acting.

Meera, I too think Smita Patil was wonderful. I often wonder what she would be like today had she survived.

All the movies I've seen are listed in the index pages - of Smita's I've only seen a few, though I have *Bhumika* at home and, like many others, it will be seen eventually. Someone just mentioned *Ardh satya* to me the other day; I wasn't familiar with it before but now it's on my radar screen.

i liked the film umraojaan n the acting of abhishaikh n ashwariya

    Dutta saheb,

The film Umrao Jaan failed only one account MUSIC the singer who gave playback for Umrao did not match the magnanimity of the character
I dont know who scored the music but the compositions were good enough but not renderd in sur. Sur nam ki koi cheez hi nahi thi.
Just imagine if Baiju Bawra had been made in modern times and these playback singers would have brought the film to same point where Umraojaan had to stumble.
I am not a great movie buff but music yes I at least have the ear to gauge the authenticity and the truth in the notes.
You have always a wonderful job in movie making but this was music oriented film so--
You could have consulted artists and connoisseure in the field of music God Bless u next time. You are a great movie maker
