hi, you have missed the point that there is chang of heart in ruth and sh reciprocates her love to Javed .,And in the epilogue , it states that javed was killed in the ensuing battle, ruth returns to england and dies in her ripe old age "un - married".

Hello Karthik; I haven't missed that point so much as chosen not to write about it here. My custom in reviewing films on this blog is to discuss themes, moods, and aesthetics, rather than providing detailed point-by-point plot summaries which are often available elsewhere. I also don't like to give away the ending. *wink* At any rate, at some point in the past I discussed the interpretation of the end of this film to death, on the BollyWHAT discussion board.

What I found most interesting in this film is that it is the only time I've seen an Indian film honestly depict the brutality and violence of the 1857 rebellion. Most Indian films view Indian freedom fighters with rose-tinted glasses, and British characters in such stories are mostly cruel, sadistic demons who had it coming, with the occasional sympathetic character who of course is shown due respect by the magnanimous Indians. In that respect, the church scene early in the film is most remarkable for showing the brutal murder of a little English girl, and presenting for a change, the British side of the story through two very English women trapped in this fight. Subhash Ghai's opulent Kisna brags of a vaguely similar plot and, needless to say, terrible execution.
