Like you i thought the film's start was rather confusing. On movies like this i read 70 percent of the story anyway on Wikipedia or IMDB before viewing, but in this case the plot hadn't been explained well anywhere (in order, i guess, to reveal not too much). (I wouldn't read the plot on a review site like yours, because i don't want to get influenced by any critical opinion.)

Like you i noted the strong parallels of Azmi's roles in this movie and then in Fire and i would also like to know who took any inspiration from which movie.

When i read the lyrics you quote i regret all the more that my DVD didn't have subtitles for the songs (not always are Bollywood song texts delightful though).

I thought Mrityu Dand was rather gory, bold in its political opinions and it reminded me a lot of rabiat 80s Bollies, several with Madhuri Dixit, incl. Ram Lakhan. Nonetheless after the initial confusion Mrityu Dand gets entertaining and the actors are all superb.

I had been very excited to see Madhuri Dixit and Shabana Azmi together in one movie, because they are two of the most grounded, substantial actors. But their impact here seems somewhat overshadowed by the brutality of the movie's male population. Anyway i liked the film, but i would like it more with less blood shed.
